As South Africans, we’re blessed with wild coastlines, amazing inland waters, and some of the most thrilling fishing experiences in the world.

Over 2,000 species of fish are found in the waters around our coastlines, as well as 183 species of freshwater fish.

Whether you’re a seasoned angler or a weekend enthusiast, there is a perfect fishing experience just for you.

Here are our top five of South Africa’s best fishing spots:

1. Sodwana Bay

Situated along the majestic northeastern coastline of KwaZulu-Natal, Sodwana Bay is perfect for anglers looking for a real deep-water adventure.

Part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a UNESCO World Hertiage-listed site, is a hotspot for deep-sea fishing enthusiasts. Known for its warm, crystal-clear Indian Ocean waters, this area teems with game fish like marlin, sailfish, and dorado.

While deep-sea fishing is the area’s main focus, Sodwana Bay also offers options for shore-based angling. Rock and surf fishing enthusiasts can try their luck with smaller species like kingfish, shad, and pompano.

The fishing season at Sodwana Bay peaks during summer, from October to March, when game fish migrate through the area.

When planning a truly unforgettable fishing trip in the area, make sure to book a charter for the best experience and adhere to the park’s conservation rules.

2. Breede River

Winding its way through the Western Cape and stretching over 325km from the Ceres Mountains to the mouth at Witsand,  the Breede River is one of the country’s largest rivers.

The Breede River is famous for its record-breaking catches of dusky kob (locally called kabeljou) and for its diverse selection of amazing freshwater and saltwater fish.

Popular catches along the Breede River include:

  • Spotted Grunter
  • Leervis (Garrick)
  • White Steenbras
  • Rays
  • And skates

For those looking to book some accommodation, it is recommended to look at:

  • Witsand, located at the river’s mouth
  • Malgas is located a bit up the river and a remote riverside village
  • And Infanta, which is on the other side of the river from Malgas.

However, multiple camping sites are available along this pristine river. You should try to hire a boat to take advantage of all the fishing spots.

3. Cape Vidal

Cape Vidal is tucked away within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park in KwaZulu-Natal. A pristine and secluded destination, it offers spectacular fishing opportunities and is surrounded by golden beaches, coastal forests, and rolling dunes.

Cape Vidal offers anglers a unique blend of beach, rock, and offshore fishing experiences. It is particularly popular for catching:

  • Shad (Elf)
  • Kingfish (Giant Trevally)
  • Kob (Kabeljiou)
  • Tuna
  • Dorada
  • And more.

During the winter months (May to August), anglers will be blessed with abundant shad, while summer brings warmer currents that draw sailfish, dorado, and king mackerel closer to the shore.

The area has multiple accommodation options ranging from rustic cabins to luxurious lodges.

4. Dullstroom

Dullstroom is South Africa’s premier fly-fishing destination. Nestled in the scenic highlands of Mpumalanga at an altitude of 2.100m above sea level, the town and its surrounding area are renowned for their tranquil trout dams and streams.

The cool, clear waters and crisp mountain air make for a peaceful fishing retreat and a perfect environment for trout.

As you’d expect, there are multiple fishing spots, which include:

  • The Drops River
  • Dullstroom Dam
  • Verloren Valei Nature Reserve
  • And numerous lakes and dams on private estates

For your information, the majority of fishing venues encourage or enforce catch-and-release practices to preserve the trout population and maintain the ecosystem.

5. Struisbaai – Shark Fishing Capital

Struisbaai is famous for its calm, crystal-clear waters and opportunities to catch some of the country’s biggest sharks, including ragged-tooth and blacktip sharks.

For those looking for a challenge, Struisbaai offers adrenaline-pumping experiences where you can battle some of the ocean’s most fearsome predators.

Some of the seaside village’s and surroundings’ most popular fishing spots include:

  • Struisbaai Harbour Wall
  • De Mond Nature Reserve

  • And Cape Agulhas

The best season for shark fishing is from November to March, with year-round availability to catch a ragged-tooth shark.

But before you pack your gear and hook up the boat trailer, ensure your watercraft is ready with a quick battery check at your local SABAT Xpress store.
